2/7/08 - Watched the Lipstick Jungle last night. Most definitely not as bad as Cashmere Mafia (although that would have been truly hard to beat) & it's not as cartoonish, but certainly not good. And definitely don't think it's got the potential to be Sex & the City part 2, although to be fair, I only saw one episode. And first episodes do tend to be somewhat awkward. It did have its moments, but the ending with "the girls" getting together for their drink of champagne at the end was so incredibly bad, corny and poorly acted, it sort of ruined any of the minor potential it had for me... Because I'm a glutton for punishment, and enjoy a good car wreck, admittedly I'll probably tune in for a few more.
2/4/08 - With the writers strike still on, the only thing I've been watching consistently is (A) Daily Show.
Also checking out "In Treatment" on HBO. Watched all 5 episodes (3 of them back to back.) I appreciate it. It's smart. (It IS HBO). But it is wholly unrealistic, which that too I could probably forgive... I do see that there is something compelling about it, but it is just as easy for me to turn off too. Just not sure yet. I'll watch a few more before I decided... Jury's still out.
Eli Stone is on the DVR. Will eventually watch, but not rushing. Only mildly interested.
Will check out Lipstick Jungle on the 7th. It's probably awful, but it can't be worse than it's rival, Darren Starr's Cashmere Mafia. THAT show is so bad I almost couldn't stop watching it. Could just be genius...
Playlist
Eddie Vedder - "Into the Wild" soundtrack Can't stop listening to it. Always liked eddie vedder, and i'm a sucker for a soulful voice and an acoustic guitar - and the songs happen to be really good. I will burn out inevitably. But for now, it's in very heavy rotation. Vampire Weekend - "Vampire Weekend" My niece, 17 tomorrow, has been raving about these guys for six months. Although I'd heard most of the tracks already, the full album just came out last week. Bob Lefsetz (big music industry or actually anti-industry blog) wrote a scathing review of the band on Letterman. I don't wholly disagree with this guy, they aren't the most awesome musicians or the "second coming" as he puts it. But who cares. They're totally refreshing, laid back, unaffected, absolutely adorable and lots of fun. Pure pop. What's not to like?
Bishop Allen - "The Broken String" Another great pop record - more americana, but still pop nonetheless. I listened to this record to death a while ago & thought I was done. But it found my way back into my head...
Reading List
The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster
I've read a handful of Paul Auster books, the first being Leviathan, which initially made me a fan. But this might actually be my favorite. I bought this book a while ago and has been sitting on my pile of "to read" books. For some reason it called to me, and I'm glad it did. My sister, who reads voraciously and who i trust implicitly with her selections, (her list on her blog is very reliable) told me she read it and was sad when it finished. So sitting on a plane on my way back from Atlanta, I got the chance to plow through (uninterrupted) and finish it. In the back of my mind, I was waiting for the "sad" part. And when I read the last page, feeling incredibly sad, I realized exactly what she meant. She was just sad the book ended. I felt exactly the same. I loved the characters & the intimacy of the neighborhood. And I loved how this seemingly simple story illustrated so wonderfully how the twists in life (both beautiful and tragic) somehow just works themselves out, and how family ultimately connects us to ourselves.
